Abstract

Summary Evidence was presented for autoantibody formation against a thermostable ethanol-insoluble antigen (BE antigen) characteristic for brain. Rabbit antisera to brain BE of human and porcine origin combined with rabbit brain BE. Antisera of rabbits immunized with rabbit brain BE and of pigs immunized with porcine brain BE contained brain-specific antibodies acting upon brain BE originating from the antibody-forming animal. In addition to these antibodies, some anti-brain BE sera contained autoantibodies that combined with a non-organ-specific antigen.
