Abstract

Summary Sections of chorioallantoic and amniotic membranes infected with Newcastle-disease virus show spheres and rods on the surface of the epithelial cells when examined by the electron microscope. These particles are morphologically similar to the elementary bodies seen in ultracentrifuged preparations of virus from infected egg fluids. Changes in infected cells include thickening of the superficial membrane followed by vacuolation and increased density of the cytoplasm.
