Abstract

AbstractLg phase displacement spectral density corner periods of recent earthquakes in central New Brunswick and central Arkansas are used to point out a potential source of dispersion in the relative scaling of eastern North American strong-motion data. The corner periods of one of the central New Brunswick and several of the larger central Arkansas earthquakes are atypical of other events of similar magnitude and seismic moment in the region. The maximum far-field ground motion of an earthquake is a function of its corner period. Therefore, strong-motion data of earthquakes that exhibit atypical characteristics, such as a displaced corner period, are a source of dispersion in the scaling of that strong-motion data if plotted as a function of magnitude or seismic moment.
