On the Ferroelectric Domain Wall in Triglycine Sulfate

Abstract

Characteristics of the domain wall of ferroelectrics triglycine sulfate (TGS) are calculated by means of Zhirnov's continuum theory. On the basis of an approximate estimation of the correlation energy coefficient κ, the values of the wall thickness δ (10-6 cm in order of magnitude) and of the wall energy density σ (4 to 12 erg/cm2) are obtained. It is shown that, independently of the value of the unknown coefficient κ, the ratio δ/σ equals 3·10-7 cm3/erg for TGS far below the Curie temperature and exceeds by orders of magnitude the value of the same quantity for BaTiO3 or Rochelle salt. The dependence of σ on the wall orientation in the crystal has been studied; it is found that the energy is minimum for a wall oriented along the crystallographic axes a, b, which is in agreement with the experimental observations. The angular wall energy dependence, however, appears to be quantitatively little pronounced.
