Nonperturbative Analysis of the Coleman–Weinberg Phase Transition

Abstract

We study the coarse grained free energy for the Coleman–Weinberg phase transition in four-dimensional scalar QED (as a function of the mass term). Our method is based on the solution of a nonperturbative flow equation. This permits a consistent treatment of the effective potential near the origin, a region not accessible to standard perturbation theory. Our results confirm the first-order character of the phase transition for arbitrary values of the scalar coupling. They demonstrate how flow equations can be used for a description of first-order phase transitions.
