Abstract

Scattered light produces spurious optical rotations of up to 80 millidegrees in commercial polarimeters. Even larger "rotations," up to 180 millidegrees, are observed when the sample simultaneously absorbs and scatters light. These effects may account for the optical activity reported in the Orgueil meteorite.
