Specificity in the Binding of Escherichia coli Ribosomes to Natural Messenger RNA

Abstract

Initiation factor C(F2) promotes 30 S ribosome binding to RNA templates. However, another initiator protein, factor B(F3), determines the specific recognition in messenger RNA of the initiation signal for translation. Template competition experiments demonstrate that this signal is not merely the codon AUG.
