Abstract

The radiation-induced release of the charge compensating ions Li+ and Na+ from the substitutional aluminum impurity in α-quartz has been investigated by measuring the growth of the infrared active Al–OH− center as a function of sample temperature during irradiation. It was found that Li+ is released 10–15 K lower in temperature than Na+.
