Stretching Vibrations in Condensed Systems : Especially Bonds Containing Hydrogen

Abstract

A study has been made of the stretching vibrations of a variety of bonds, mostly containing hydrogen, in condensed systems. In particular, measurements have been made of vapor-liquid shifts and of the shifts with pressure to 10 000 atmospheres. From the results, an attempt has been made to estimate the relative importance of dispersion, induction, orientation, and repulsion (overlap) energies. The importance of the redistribution of electrons in a molecule due to the varying electronegativity of its constituent parts is particularly noted.
