Abstract

The effect of crystal field symmetry on the appearance of K x-ray absorption edges of metal ions in complexes is considered. In particular, the splitting of the 1s—4p absorption for first row transition elements is related to the splitting of the degeneracy of the 4p energy levels in the ion by the crystal field.
