Abstract

The properties of curved fluid interfaces in the presence of external fields are examined from the molecular point of view and are shown to imply a generalized Gibbs-Kelvin equation. These results are then related to Gibbs' phenomenological treatment and thus provide expressions for the relevant thermodynamic parameters in terms of the detailed properties of the transition zone. The formulation leads to an asymptotic estimate of the free energy and to corrections for the Laplace equation determining the shapes of interfaces.
