Abstract

A picture of the structure of pyrolytic graphites has been obtained from an x-ray study of several samples deposited under various conditions at temperatures ranging from 1700° to 2500°C. The structural features investigated include preferred orientation, layer order, and crystallite sizes and strains perpendicular and parallel to the basal layers. Deposits made at 1700°C show preferred orientation of the order of 10:1, crystallite dimensions below 100 Å, nearly random layer order, and high strains in the c direction. In materials deposited at 1900°C and higher, the preferred orientation is sharply increased to values between 103:1 and 104:1, and representative values for the crystallite dimensions L̄c and L̄a are 200 and 265 Å, respectively. The layer order remains nearly random, however, and the c-direction strains show only a slight reduction. The basal layers themselves are approximately strain-free.
