Abstract

A study is made of the rotational states of dilute concentrations of small polar molecules trapped in a rare gas matrix at low temperatures (∼4.2°K). Under the assumption that exchange forces may be neglected, the remaining crystal interactions are found to produce only a slight splitting of those rotational states populated at the temperatures considered. It is suggested that this model provides an explanation of the free rotational effects observed in several recent experimental investigations of the spectra of such systems.
