Abstract
A quantitative measurement of the current-density distribution over the surface of monocrystalline tungsten field emitters is obtained by densitometric analysis of calibrated photographic negatives of emission patterns observed with a modified Mueller projection tube. Analysis of distributions thus obtained permits an improved evaluation of average field current density and a confirmation of the surface distribution of electric field previously derived; an earlier comparison of experiment with field emission theory is thus strengthened. Current-density ratios for various crystal faces of the emitter confirm recent values of the work function for those faces. Emission patterns were viewed on an aluminum backed phosphor, the advantages and fabrication of which are discussed. Relative light output from such phosphors is presented for excitation by field currents at various values of the applied potential for both steady state and microsecond operation.
