Abstract
The adsorption behavior of O2, H2, CH4, C2H6, and C2H4 has been investigated on clean Cr films at 27° and 100°C. The gases adsorbed in the following order; O2>C2H4>H2>C2H6>CH4. No gaseous decomposition products were observed when CH4 adsorbed on a clean Cr surface, but C2H6 interacted with Cr at 100°C to produce appreciable amounts of gaseous H2. Ethylene was found to undergo extensive self-hydrogenation to C2H6 over Cr films at both 27° and 100°C. The presence of preadsorbed oxygen on Cr films at 100°C inhibited both H2 production from adsorbed C2H6 and the self-hydrogenation of C2H4.
