Abstract

The intrinsic viscosity theory of Kirkwood, Riseman, and Auer is applied to a molecular model of two long rods of equal length connected by a flexible joint. In the nondraining limit, the intrinsic viscosity of a solution of such molecules is predicted to be 15% lower than that for rigid rods of the same molecular weight, in good agreement with experimental results of Teramoto, Yamashita, and Fujita. This reduction in intrinsic viscosity is smaller than would be expected from the radius of gyration.
