Abstract
A description is given of the design, construction and performance of an electron microscope stage which combines operation at high resolution with the following facilities: (i) translations transverse to the axis, (ii) translation along the axis over a range sufficient to include the settings for high resolution convergent beam diffraction and magnetic domain observation, (iii) tilting over a range of ±40° about two independent axes, (iv) anticontamination shielding, (v) cooling to approximately −140°C, (vi) heating to approximately 1200°C, and (vii) gas injection. Examples are given of applications in crystal physics, and in particular it is shown that surface structure can be observed directly at the unit cell level.
