Abstract
A relative rate constant for the deactivation of O(1D2) by molecular oxygen has been obtained by two different experimental methods. In the first method, O(1D2) was generated by the photolysis of NO2 at 2288 Å, and in the second method by the photolysis of N2O at 2139 Å. The rate of deactivation was determined relative to that of reaction with N2O in the first method, and with neopentane in the second, by measuring the decrease in the yields of nitrogen and neopentanol, respectively, when O2 was added. The values obtained, expressed relative to the rate of O(1D2) reaction with CO2, kO2 / kCO2, are 0.37 and 0.28, respectively. The estimated error is about 10%–15% for both determinations. These values are in reasonable agreement with each other and with several values reported in the literature.
