Cation K X-Ray Emission from Ionic Crystals

Abstract

The K x-ray emission spectra from the cations in KCl, CaF2, CaO, CaC2, CaCO3, and CaSO4(2H2O) are discussed. The energy separations between the outer cation and anion electronic shells are derived from the spectra. In the cases of the simple ions these energy separations can be calculated using a point ion model. The input data into these calculations is just the free ion ionization energies, and the Madelung potentials. The corrections that can be made to this simple model are discussed. Structure is observed in the cross-transition spectra from the salts containing complex anions or neutrals. It is shown that this structure most probably represents the one-hole valence spectrum of the complex species.
