Infrared Spectra of the Argon Matrix-Isolated Cyanamide, Cyanamide-d2, and Carbodiimide

Abstract

The infrared spectra of cyanamide and cyanamide-d2 isolated in solid argon at 20°K were studied. The NH2 and ND2 wagging frequencies were observed at 414 and 310 cm−1, respectively, and were interpreted in terms of “inversion” transitions. Cyanamide and cyanamide-d2 were also pyrolyzed in a hot nozzle under very low vapor pressure, and the carbodiimide produced from the pyrolysis was positively identified from the resulting infrared spectra.
