Abstract
A simple restatement is given for the description of polymer optical properties in terms of the interaction matrix coupling monomers. Two- and three-state solutions are given explicitly and in detail for the polypeptide alpha helix, beta sheets, and polyproline helices. The results are compared with perturbation-theory results. Agreement with experimental data is good except for polyproline II. The role played by the amide band recently observed in the gas phase is discussed, as is the extension of the calculations to other regular polymers and amorphous polymers.
