Low-Frequency Motions in Liquid Carbon Tetrachloride. II. The Raman Spectrum

Abstract

The low-frequency (0–130-cm−1 shifts) depolarized Raman spectrum of liquid carbon tetrachloride has been obtained. Comparison of the integrated intensity of this band with the allowed vibrational bands gives a value for a root-mean-square polarizability anisotropy of about 1 Å3. The derived correlation function is compared to the correlation function from previous infrared results. The data are consistent with a substantial root-mean-square distortion from tetrahedral symmetry although the time behavior is not explained.
