Abstract
Measurements in FeF2 show that the effective magnetic field obtained from the Mössbauer effect nuclear hfs of 57Fe provides a good measure of the magnetization of divalent iron in rutile structure fluorides. Similar measurements in MnF2 containing 0.7 mole % FeF2 show that the spin deviation of the iron impurity increases much more slowly with temperature than that of the host lattice. A fit of the MnF2 data to a molecular field model, considering only the next-nearest neighbor exchange, gives JFeMn=1.87 cm−1. However, systematic deviations show that the in-band contribution to the spin deviation which dominates at low temperature cannot be ignored. Results of measurements on Fe2+ in CoF2 are also given.
