  30. For equilibrium to occur at high substrate loadings, the ratio of the particle diffusion and solvent evaporation rates must be close to 1. Assuming steady-state diffusion, the characteristic time, τ, for evaporation of a solvent film of thickness, Δx, is τ = (ρlΔx)/(DsΔc), where ρ is the solvent density (1.483 g/cm3for chloroform); Δcis the concentration gradient in the gas phase (9.4 × 10-4g/cm3for chloroform at 20 °C);Dsis the diffusion coefficient of chloroform vapor in air (∼0.2 cm2/sec); andlis the stagnant diffusion film thickness (∼0.2 μm). When Δx= 200 Å, τ = 0.3 μs for chloroform at 20 °C. The penetration distance (or diffusion length) isx= (4πDpτ)1/2, whereDpis the particle diffusion coefficient. Using the Stokes−Einstein equationDp=kT/6πμRto calculateDp, a 100 Å diameter nanocrystal diffuses 100 Å after τ = 0.3 μs, or one particle diameter. Becausex∝ 1/R1/2,x/Δxis larger for smaller particles, and equilibrium is more easily achieved during solvent evaporation.
