/ CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (2000)- In the literature, we can find several empirical rules allegedly suitable for a rough estimate of IP's of outer electrons. Benson (Benson, S. W.J. Phys.Chem.1989,93, 4457) argued that generally one can represent successive ratios by IP(J)/IP(J+ 1) ∼J/(J+ l), where IP(J) is theJth ionization potential of the species considered. Recently, rather arduous discussion on this rule lead by Lowe (e.g., Lowe, J. P.Chem.Educ.2000,77, 155;2002,79, 30, 429) and Rioux and DeKock (e.g., Rioux, F.; DeKock, R. L.Chem.Educ.2002,79, 29, 429) appeared. This was mainly oriented on the question of whether the energy of an electron is to be viewed as potential or kinetic, which is of less interest here. The above rule of Benson of course differs from the rules given in this article.
