  22. Reasonable mechanisms involving disproportionation of [5,5] as the first step can be written which predict first-order decay of the [5,5] ion. For example, the sequence (1) 2[5,5] ⇌ [4,5] + [5,6]; (2) [5,6] → [3,4] + O2; (3) [3,4] + [4,5] → 2[4,4] is first order when step 2 is rate limiting and the equilibrium position for step 1 lies far to the left.
