- In water, the equilibrium defining acidity is HA + H2O = H3O++ A-, withKa(HA) = (aH+/aH+°)(aA−/aA-°)/(aHA/aHA°) withaH+, etc. the activities of the components at equilibrium and aH+°, etc. the activities of the components in their standard states. In dilute solution under ideal conditions,Ka(HA) = [H3O+][A-]/[HA]. For the acidity of H3O+in H2O, H3O++ H2O = H3O++ H2O,K= 1. In order to compare the acidity of H3O+with HA, it is necessary to include the concentration of water in water, 55.5 M at 25 °C, withKa(H3O+) =K[H3O+] = 55.5 M and pKa(H3O+) = −1.74.
