/ Surface Sci. by Strayer (1973)- The saturation coverage for CO/Ni(111) at room temperature is reported to be θ = 0.53 ML (ref. [3]). For adsorption at 5.5 K (fig. 1b), θ = 0.53 ML corresponds to an exposure of ~ 11 L. For a given exposure, the amount of CO reaching the surface for adsorption at 77 K (fig. 1a) is larger than that at 5.5 K (due to the higher temperature of the radiation shields). Also, the sticking coefficient at 77 K may be less than unity for high coverages. The amount of CO on the surface for the 77 K and 5.5 K. exposures (fig. 2), therefore, may be quite different for the same measured exposure.

by Hölzl (1979)- Previously reported saturation value of Δφ for CO/Ni(111) is 1.1 eV for adsorption at room temperature (ref. [3]). While our lower value may be due to the differences in temperature and/or measurement techniques, the presence of small amounts of impurities on the surface cannot be excluded. In ref. [4] it was observed that spurious amounts of carbon/sulfur at the surface result in too small values of Δφ even if present in concentrations that are below the detection level of AES.
