Abstract

AbstractIn this study we investigated the contrast of lateral force at highly oriented pyrolytic graphite steps in an electrolytic environment with a scanning force and friction microscope. A characteristic enhancement of lateral force was visible. Steps were imaged with and without electrochemical potential control whereby a change of friction with potential could be observed. The behaviour of lateral force at the steps indicated that the observed contrast enhancement must be a real friction effect and is not caused solely by the topography.
