Abstract

AbstractThe hydride transfer from isobutane to protonated acetaldehyde, to give t‐butyl ion and ethanol (which is subsequently protonated), proceeds at approximately the same rates (k = 6 − 9 × 10−4 M−1S−1 at 0°C) in 9:1 HF‐SbF5 and HF‐BF3. This indicates that protonation of the alcohol formed does not assist the hydride transfer step kinetically. The hydride transfer from isobutane to protonated acetone is slower than that to protonated acetaldehyde by a factor of about 3 × 103.
