Abstract

AbstractIt is already well known that in a number of cases polyvalent chlorides and oxychlorides are able to form quite stable complexes. It was, however, not clear what influences determine the formation of these complexes, and we therefore made a number of investigations for the purpose of getting some insight into the properties of these chlorides and the reaction mechanism of complex formation. It is thought that polyvalent chlorides and oxychlorides behave in fundamentally different ways, the former forming complexes by a Cl− ion donor mechanism, the latter predominantly by dipole interaction.
