  3. To describe the interaction of atoms and molecules or of atoms or molecules with a solid surface “potential curves” have been found of the highest value. Many instances are given inJ. H.de Boer's“Electron emission and adsorbtion phenomena” (Cambridge1935) a book which is for an important part based on a consistent use of potential curves. We will show in this paper that the utility of this: method extends as well to the case of colloïdal particles.

  11. To explain the issue of his experiments v. Buzagh assumed a lyosphere that is a region of orientated water molecules surrounding the particles. It does not seem strictly necessary to introduce this conception; since as shown below a combination of an attraction and an electric repulsion can produce a potential curve as given in fig. 3 we may interpret v. Buzagh's observations without making use of a lyosphere.
