Abstract
Abstractβ‐Indium sulfide crystals have been studied by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. From an analysis of the defective spinel structure, different types of ordering defects are predicted. Ordering twins and two types of antiphase domains have been observed, and their analysis is in complete agreement with the proposed models. Heating experiments enabled a distinction to be made between the defects associated with the tetrahedrally surrounded cations and those in octahedral sites. A mechanism is proposed for the two transitions previously observed in this material: The transition at 420 °C is attributed to the disordering of tetrahedral cations, whereas the transition at 750 °C is associated with the disordering of the octahedrally surrounded cations.
