Abstract

AbstractMicrotubules of poly(ortho‐toluidine) (POT), with 0.8–6.0 µm diameter and 10−4–10−2 S/cm room‐temperature conductivity, were synthesized by a template‐free method in the presence of β‐naphthalene sulfonic acid (β‐NSA) as a dopant. It was found that the completeness, size, room‐temperature conductivity and crystallinity of the resulting POT‐NSA microtubules depended upon the concentration of the NSA dopant. UV‐vis. spectra, XPS and X‐ray diffraction were used to characterize the molecular structure, showing that the polymer chain of POT‐NSA microtubules is identical to that of the doped POT synthesized by a common method, but that its crystallinity is higher than that of common POT. It was proposed that the monomer salt formed with NSA played a template‐like role in forming POT‐NSA microtubules. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
