Abstract

AbstractUsing both monochromatic small angle X‐ray scattering and a new method of electron microscopy, we have shown that polybutadiene/polystyrene/polybutadiene (BSB) block copolymers exhibit in solution in a preferential solvent of one block, liquid‐crystalline structures. These structures are of three types: Hexagonal, lamellar, and reversed hexagonal. The hexagonal and reversed hexagonal structures are recognizable from one another with certitude only by electron microscopy.We have found that the structural type adopted by BSB copolymers is governed by the composition of the copolymer. Inside the domain of stability of each structure, we have studied the variation of the structural parameters with different factors: concentration and nature of the solvent, composition and molecular weight of the copolymer, temperature. So we have shown that BSB block copolymers exhibit, as a function of temperature, only one type of liquid‐crystalline structure which is stable up to about 150–170°C.
