- A complete description of the IRMPD mechanism is available elsewhere (ref. [11]). Briefly energy from an absorbed photon is rapidly relaxed to other vibrational modes via intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR). Since cross‐anharmonicities tend to be small the original mode remains resonant with the light source. This allows rapid noncoherent absorption of many photons causing resonant “heating” of a molecule beyond its fragmentation threshold.

- Calculations done at MP2 level with cc‐pVDZ basis using the Gaussian 98 program (ref. [23]). All structures reported as minima had no imaginary frequencies while the symmetric transition state structure for protonated diglyme had exactly one imaginary frequency along the normal coordinate connecting the wells of the double minimum potential.
