Abstract
AbstractGeometric definition of the sites and site lattices for square, hexagonal and pseudo‐hexagonal faces. It is shown that the site lattices do not necessarily have the same symmetry as the lattice formed by the surface metal atoms. This provides possibilities for recognizing the type of site effectively used in a given film.It is suggested that on bare metal surfaces hydrogen atoms are adsorbed over the deepest regions of the periodic surface (sites b or d). The negative adsorption is the adsorption of one hydrogen atom per metal atom. For some faces there are two sites per metal atom. A second H‐atom may then be adsorbed but it inevitably interacts with preadsorbed neighbours. The interaction involves partial lateral bonding between the H‐atoms together with a loosening of the bonds holding the preadsorbed atoms to the surface. The application of these ideas in the field of adsorption and catalysis is briefly outlined.
