Neutron Scattering Experiments in the Neighborhood of the Glass Transition in Polybutadiene – a Test of Mode Coupling

Abstract

AbstractWe review recent quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments taken in the neighborhood of the glass transition in polybutadiene. The experimental results are compared with predictions of the mode coupling theory. We specially emphasize experimental evidence for the existence of a dynamical transition above Tg. We present several experiments which from characteristic anomalies consistently obtain critical temperatures between 213 K ≤ Tc ≤ 220 K. Furthermore, we discuss experimental results for the dynamic structure factor S(Q,t) in the regime of the structural relaxation, showing striking similarities with the predictions of the mode coupling approach.
