Abstract

AbstractIf a metal surface is in contact with an aggressive atmosphere, then thin electrolyte layers are formed on top of the metal surface which may be as thin as a few monolayers of water. – Two techniques are described which allow to analyze the electrochemical processes involved in the corrosion of such a surface: the first technique measures corrosion rates and corrosion potentials as function of the electrolyte thickness without touching the surface under investigation, the second allows to measure polarization curves on metals covered with thin electrolyte layers using a Kelvin probe as reference electrode. Results are discussed which have been obtained with platinum and iron as working electrodes.
