Abstract

AbstractNeutron scattering experiments were performed on liquid acetonitrile in the temperature range ‐19°C to 75°C. The quasielastic peak was Fourier‐transformed to obtain the intermediate scattering law.The experimental results are compared to theoretical scattering laws calculated on the basis of the random walk theory. Expressions for the rotational and translational contributions are derived. Their correspondence with equivalent expressions for the nuclear magnetic relaxation rates is discussed in detail. The parameters in the theoretical intermediate scattering laws are taken from published NMR relaxation data. Translational self‐diffusion constants were determined by spin‐echo experiments. Different results from both types of experiments are discussed.
