Abstract

Discrete neutral assemblies in solution can be studied with the analytical method described here. A prerequisite is that one of the components contains an ion‐complexing site, for example a crown ether unit. When alkali metal ions are added, charged assemblies form, which can be examined by electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS) without disruption of their hydrogen bonds. IL in the title stands for ion labeling.

  34. For studies at the rather high concentration (10−2M) used in this work ion‐molecule reactions in the gas phase might occur in the ES source. To be certain that peaks observed for assembliesA3B3 A2B3 andA3B2were not an artifact of ESMS we studied a solution in whichAwas replaced by benzo[18]crown‐6 (18C6) a compound unable to form hydrogen bonds. The only peaks observed in the ES mass spectrum of this solution corresponded to ions 18C6/K+ (18C6)2/K+and (18C6)2/2K+. No peaks for possible assemblies ofBand macrocycle were observed.
  35. The ionization of the complexes in S1was also examined by adding NaClO4and CsCl instead of KPF6. With NaClO4the results were similar to those obtained with KPF6: adducts of KPF6/K+were replaced by adducts of NaClO4/Na+. In contrast with CsCl A3B3was the only complex detected but in two charge states: [A3B3+ 3Cs+] and [A3B3+ 2Cs+]. The difference in the ionization might be explained by the specific complexation of the alkali metal ions by the crown ether. Indeed Cs+is known to form the sandwich complex (18C6)2/Cs+ while Na+and K+give the complexes 18C6/Na+and 18C6/K+.
  36. Interestingly A2B3was present only for large amounts of salt andA3B2only for smaller quantities of salt.
