Abstract

The square‐antiprismatic structure of IF corresponds to that of XeF. This shows that the extra lone pair of XeF is located in a stereochemically inactive orbital. The counterion NO⊕(NOF)2 is a polymer in which the charge‐carrying N atom is surrounded by one O and four F atoms in a square‐pyramidal arrangement.

  8. In this sense even the anions of the type [TeX6]2(X = Cl Br I) and [SeX6]2⊖(X = Cl Br) and similar antimony and bismuth anions represent no exception from the electron‐pair repulsion model. High crystal symmetry (at least the presence of one symmetry center for the central atom) generates dynamically distorted structures. With lower symmetry the structures are even statically distorted:
