Abstract
AbstractMolecular metal clusters form a very large and diverse family. They present the opportunity of modeling the intermediates involved in surface mediated catalytic reactions, of providing a source of very reactive mononuclear metal fragments, and of effecting catalytic cycles in which the cluster remains intact. The last mentioned aspect is the subject of this review article. The state‐of‐the‐art of cluster catalysis is critically analyzed. The possibilities offered by molecular metal catalysts of performing catalytic reactions at multimetal atom sites are also discussed.

- (a) The catalyst introduced into a reaction system is more accurately described as the catalyst precursor because the active catalytic species may be formed under the reaction conditions. (b) Catalysts are conventional classified as homogenous or heterogenous. However is general classification is at best misleading in that even interfacial catalytic reactions can be homogenous because they occur largely in a single phase although it may be predimonantly two dimensional. (c) This classification obviates the need for imprecise and inelegant descriptions like “heterogenezing of a homogenous catalyst”.e.g.anchoring or immobilizing a molecular catalyst to a unit support does not alter the nature of the catalysis. The effect of supporting the molecular species may however inhibit reactions that normally would occur with the same species in solution although metal atoms are mobile to varying degress on such surfaces. This mobility is sensitive to the nature of the gaseous reactants: CO has a marked tendency to “mobilize” metal atoms.

- In the characterization of chemisorbed acetylene and hydrogen on Pt(III) the results of IR studies indicated [10] that (1) the surface species was ethylidyne (CH3C) and (2) that the α‐carbon atom was over a three‐fold surface site and symmetrically bonded to three platinum atoms (the CC‐bond vector is normal to the Pt3‐plane). The paradigm for this species in cluster chemistry is [(μ3‐CH3C)Co3(CO)9][11]. A comparative vibrational spectroscopic analysis of this cluster with the data for acetylene/hydrogen chemisorbed on Pt confirmed the ethylidyne hypothesis [12].
