  39. The calculated (PBC/B3LYP/6–31G(d)) HOCO and LUCO levels for PEDOS atk = 0 are −3.45 eV and −1.79 eV respectively. For comparison the HOCO and LUCO levels of PEDOT atk = 0 are −3.54 eV and −1.69 eV respectively (ref. 16).
  40. We note that LiBF4in propylene carbonate (PC) was used as a supporting electrolyte and the PEDOS film was obtained using a constant potential mode in PC while in reference [16] LiClO4was used as a supporting electrolyte in acetonitrile and the polymer was obtained by cyclic voltammetry.
  41. Tb% = 82.5 Tc% = 27.6 andQd = 2.25 mC cm−2based on the data in Figure 1.
  42. The CE (in units of cm2C−1) at a specified wavelength is expressed as CE(λ) = ΔOD/Qd ΔOD = log[Tb(λ)/Tc(λ)] whereQdis the injected/ejected charge density (in units of C cm−2) OD is an optical density andTbandTcare the transmittance in the bleached and colored states respectively. For more details see ref. [1a e].
  43. All CE values reported in this paper were measured at 100% of a full switch which corresponds to the highest contrast ratio. We note that even higher CE values can be obtained by narrowing the switching potential window; however the contrast ratio will be compromised. See ref. [8] for details.
  44. All Calculations were performed using the Gaussian 03 program. Gaussian 03 Revision C.02 M. J.Frisch G. W.Trucks H. B.Schlegel G. E.Scuseria M. A.Robb J. R.Cheeseman J. 45. The calculated (PBC/B3LYP/6–31G(d)) HOCO and LUCO levels for PEDOS‐C6atk = 0 are −3.30 eV and −1.67 eV respectively. For comparison the HOCO and LUCO levels of PEDOT‐C6atk = 0 are −3.38 eV and −1.55 eV respectively.
  46. Tb% = 90.4 Tc% = 2.23 andQd = 2.08 mC cm−2based on the data in Figure 3a and b.
  47. A coloration efficiency of 686–773 cm2C−1was routinely obtained in several experiments.
