  20. We have also carried out Johnson‐Kendall‐Roberts (JKR) test [4 21 22] as a complementary method to evaluate the adhesion force by measuring the interfacial work of adhesion. In particular the pull‐off force (F) in elastic contact with adhesion between a hemisphere‐tipped pillar of radiusRand a planar surface is predicted byF= 3πRWa whereWais the interfacial work of adhesion between the two surfaces. For reference the work of adhesion at intimate contact between a graphitic sheet and silicon oxide was estimated to be about 300–400 mJ m–2by considering vdW interactions [4 21 23]. The measured work of adhesion in the present study varied from about 70 to 200 mJ m–2over the preload from 4.4 to 8.8 N. Although the contact between our VA‐SWNT arrays and the glass slide is not perfect the measured values of the work of adhesion are much higher than those previously reported for aligned MWNTs (ca. 20–100 mJ m–2) [4]. These results further support the strong adhesion forces observed for the VA‐SWNT dry adhesives developed in the present study.
